Award Nominations

The Iowa Innovation and Entrepreneurship Honors, hosted by the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of University of Iowa alumni, students, faculty, staff, and Venture School participants.

Know someone who is worthy of an Iowa Innovation and Entrepreneurship Honor? Complete this form to nominate a deserving Hawkeye and Iowa JPEC will contact them for additional information.

General Guidelines for Nominations

  1. Graduates, former students, faculty, and staff of the University of Iowa or past participants in any JPEC-affiliated programming may apply or be nominated. Please see individual award descriptions for further details.
  2. Nominations and applications are welcome. Complete our simple nomination form to recognize a deserving Hawkeye, and we will contact them to collect additional information.
  3. With the exception of the Enterprise Leadership Alumni and Student of the Year Awards, the nominee must have played a central role in creating and/or developing a new business enterprise, or have reimagined or significantly grown an existing business enterprise.
  4. The nominee’s company must have a reputation for sound business ethics and excellent management practices
  5. Nominee must be respected as a leader in the industry and community, as demonstrated by involvement in industry, community, and service organizations and/or activities.
  6. The nominee is a good ambassador for the University of Iowa and/or Iowa JPEC.
  7. If there are multiple founders who meet the criteria within one business, they may ALL be recognized in a single nomination for each award.
  8. Nominations will be considered for two years. It is the responsibility of the applicant or nominator to update supporting information as needed.

ALUMNI ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR

Criteria for Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year Award

Granted to an entrepreneur, who previously attended the University of Iowa, for their significant accomplishments in entrepreneurship and innovation.

  1. Must have previously attended the University of Iowa.
  2. Must currently be in an active leadership role within a business
  3. Individual has achieved a distinguished level of entrepreneurial success.
  4. If there are multiple founders who meet the criteria within one business, they may all be recognized in a single nomination.
  5. Cannot be a current employee of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center.

YOUNG ALUMNI ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR

Criteria for Young Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year Award

Granted to an entrepreneur, who previously attended the University of Iowa, for their significant accomplishments in entrepreneurship and innovation. Individuals must be age 35 or younger at time of nomination.

  1. Must have previously been a student at University of Iowa.
  2. Must currently be in an active leadership role within a business.
  3. Individual must have achieved a distinguished level of entrepreneurial success.
  4. If there are multiple founders who meet the criteria within one business, they may all be recognized in a single nomination.
  5. Cannot be a current employee of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center.

STUDENT STARTUP OF THE YEAR

Criteria for Student Startup of the Year

Granted to a University of Iowa undergraduate or graduate student startup for significant accomplishments in entrepreneurship and innovation. Winning startup will be awarded seed capital for their achievement.

  1. Must be a University of Iowa graduate or undergraduate student that is currently enrolled in six or more credit hours.
  2. Have achieved a distinguished level of entrepreneurial success.
  3. Active student(s) must be founder or co-founder of the company and continue to play an active leadership role in that company.
  4. If there are multiple founders who meet the criteria within one business, they may all be recognized in a single nomination.

IOWA INNOVATOR OF THE YEAR

Criteria for Iowa Innovator of the Year Award

Granted to startup affiliated with faculty/staff at the University of Iowa. Winning startup will be awarded seed capital for their achievement.

  1. The company must have:
    • SBIR-type grants or outside capital of $500,000 or more OR revenue totaling $500,000 or more
    • Startup leadership team in place with major operational areas accounted for and appropriate external advisors in place.
    • Prototype or validated business model
  2. The company must have completed JPEC's UI Innovators Workshop.
  3. Have achieved a distinguished level of entrepreneurial success.
  4. If there are multiple founders who meet the criteria within one business, they may all be recognized in a single nomination.
  5. Cannot be a current employee of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center.

VENTURE SCHOOL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR

Criteria for Venture School Business of the Year

Granted to a startup company that has participated in the statewide seven week-long Venture School training program at a cohort location in the state of Iowa. Winners will be awarded seed capital for their achievement.

  1. Founder(s) must have been enrolled, attended, and completed the seven week-long Venture School training program at a cohort location within the state of Iowa.
  2. Have achieved a distinguished level of entrepreneurial success.
  3. If there are multiple founders who meet the criteria within one business, they may all be recognized in a single nomination.

ENTERPRISE LEADERSHIP STUDENT OF THE YEAR

Criteria for Enterprise Leadership Student of the Year Nominee

Granted to a current JPEC degree or certificate student who has significant academic, professional, or personal accomplishments and brings significant value to the university, their employer, or other organizations in which they participate.

  1. Nominee must currently be enrolled for six or more undergraduate credit hours at the University of Iowa and have declared one of the following:
    • BBA in Management, Entrepreneurial Management Track
    • BA in Enterprise Leadership or
    • Entrepreneurial Management, Technological Entrepreneurship, Arts Entrepreneurship, or Media Entrepreneurialism certificate
  2. Have displayed leadership in and beyond the classroom.

Nominee Information
ENTERPRISE LEADERSHIP ALUMNI OF THE YEAR

Criteria for Enterprise Leadership Alumni of the Year Award

Granted to a JPEC degree or certificate alumnus who has significant professional accomplishments or who brings significant value to their organization and/or community through corporate intrapreneurship or social entrepreneurship. Iowa JPEC will honor two alumni with this award, one for social entrepreneurship and one for corporate intrapreneurship.

  1. Must have previously attended the University of Iowa and studied one of the following:
    • BBA in Management, Entrepreneurial Management Track
    • BA in Enterprise Leadership or
    • Entrepreneurial Management, Technological Entrepreneurship, Arts Entrepreneurship, or Media Entrepreneurialism certificate
  2. Must currently be creating demonstrable value through their company through corporate intrapreneurship or creating demonstrable value to their community through social entrepreneurship.
  3. Cannot be a current employee of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center.
