STUDENT SUCCESS

The Jacobson Institute is a part of the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center at the University of Iowa. Iowa JPEC has always placed a high priority on K-12 innovation and entrepreneurship outreach, beginning with Entrepreneur Camps for kids launched at Iowa JPEC's inception 20-plus years ago. In 2007, the K-12 program was named and endowed with a gift from the Richard O. Jacobson Foundation.

Today, the Jacobson Institute's mission is to help teachers infuse innovation and entrepreneurship into STEM and business classrooms and to help develop 21st Century Skills in students. We do this through teacher professional development and curricula in our STEM Innovator® and BizInnovator® programs; a nationwide Innovator Competition for students; and ongoing summer camps -- all built on the research-driven expertise of the University of Iowa.

21st-Century Skills

The Jacobson Institute's professional development prepares middle and high school teachers in the STEM fields and in business/marketing fields to have their students work in teams on real-world problems alongside business and industry partners in their communities.

The curriculum prepares students for college and a career by teaching them to apply entrepreneurial best practices, Design Thinking, and Lean Startup Methodology to authentic tasks – giving students the 21st Century skills that educators and industry leaders have said they need in the workforce.

Rachael Eisenreich

Rachael, a graduate of Eden Prairie High School in Minnesota, remembers buying smoothies and slushies from senior students in the lunch room. While this might sound strange, it was a normal occurrence at Eden Prairie thanks to entrepreneurship courses taught through the Jacobson Institute’s BizInnovator curriculum. The course, which is only open to seniors, allowed students to start their own businesses while earning a little money along the way.
