Students
Graduate Program
Through the graduate entrepreneurship program at The University of Iowa, students explore the process of identifying high-growth opportunities and leading technology-based companies. A unique interdisciplinary approach combines advanced business courses with the University's established expertise in engineering and health sciences. Students will have the opportunity to work with successful entrepreneurs and leading UI researchers to evaluate the commercial viability of new technologies. Students interested in pursuing their own entrepreneurial venture will receive specialized education and individual support from UI entrepreneurship faculty and staff.
MBA students may pursue a concentration in Entrepreneurship; other graduate students may take advanced courses and work towards a Certificate in Entrepreneurship. Courses are offered at the main campus in Iowa City and in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and the Quad Cities.
Program Requirements
Both the MBA Concentration in Entrepreneurship and Graduate Certificate in Entrepreneurship require completion of twelve semester hours of coursework in entrepreneurship, three of which must be 06T:220 Entrepreneurship and New Business Formation. Graduate students may choose from the following courses to complete their entrepreneurship program of study.

Course Descriptions
06T:210 - Developing a Service Business
Professional services businesses have as their primary product intellectual capacity. This course will help students begin, grow, and prosper as the owner or manager of a professional service business.
06T:220 - Entrepreneurship and New Business Formation
This course is an introduction to the entrepreneurial process from conception to birth of a new venture. It discusses attributes of successful entrepreneurs, innovation and creativity, opportunity recognition, venture screening, identification of resources, and feasibility analysis.
06T:233 - Capital Acquisition & Cash Flow Management
This course helps students understand the process of capital acquisition and cash flow management. It explains techniques, projections, and measurements used in valuing and funding new and growing ventures. It also teaches how to identify sources and strategies for raising capital.
06T:246 - Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation
This course explores the role of technology in the creation, growth, and survival of industries. It examines the process, risks, and rewards of technological innovation and commercialization as well as successful approaches to developing technological strategy and products.
06T:250 – Managing the Growth Business
This course examines issues faced by newly formed businesses experiencing rapid growth. Topics covered include adapting a company's organizational structure, building a management team, hiring new employees, legal issues, raising equity capital, and managing the strategic growth of a business.
06T:290 - Seminar in Entrepreneurship
This course addresses several special topics in entrepreneurship, which may include business acquisition, franchising, real estate, business valuation, and technology transfer. Topics change each semester.
6T:292 Entrepreneurship: Business Consulting
This field study course provides students an opportunity to provide consulting services to start-up and early-stage companies. It will explain various aspects of the consultation process including: proposal development, data collection and analysis, and final report preparation and presentation. The prerequisites are 06T:120, 06T:133, and 06T:134 or with consent of the instructor.
06T:294 - Entrepreneurship: Advanced Business Planning
This advanced business planning course is designed to assist students in the preparation of high-growth business plans, including how to present a business plan, negotiate with potential investors, and evaluate future growth opportunities.
