Courses
The following courses are offered through the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center at The University of Iowa. One hundred level courses are for undergraduate students; two hundred level courses are for graduate students. All courses are three semester hours unless otherwise noted.
06T:113 - Basics of Small Business Accounting
This Internet-based course is an introduction to understanding financial statements of small companies including the basics of balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Prerequisite: Open to non-business students. Duplicates 06A:001. (1 s.h.)
06T:116 - Basics of Small Business Marketing
This Internet-based course is an introduction to basic marketing concepts. It reviews traditional and guerrilla marketing strategies and focuses on collecting marketing information required in a business plan. Prerequisite: Open to non-business students. Duplicates 06M:100. (1 s.h.)
06T:120/220 - Entrepreneurship and Innovation (formerly Entrepreneurship and New Business Formation)
This course is an introduction to the entrepreneurial process from conception to birth of a new venture. It discusses attributes of successful entrepreneurs, innovation and creativity, opportunity recognition, venture screening, identification of resources, and feasibility analysis. The co requisite is 06T:113, 06A:001, or an approved college-level accounting course and 06T:116, 06M:100 or an approved college-level marketing course. Duplicates: 06T:125.
06T:133/233 - Entrepreneurial Finance (formerly Capital Acquisition & Cash Flow Management)
This course helps students understand the process of capital acquisition and cash flow management. It explains techniques, projections, and measurements used in valuing and funding new and growing ventures. It also teaches how to identify sources and strategies for raising capital. The prerequisite is 06T:120.
06T:134/234 - Entrepreneurial Marketing
This course provides practical marketing concepts for determining the market potential of a business; developing a marketing plan, identifying markets, creating products, designing promotions and sales programs, and assessing ongoing customer service needs. 06T:120 is a prerequisite and 06T:116 Basics of Small Business Marketing, 06M:100, or an approved college-level course is a pre/corequisite 06T:134.
06T:145 - Legal Aspects of Entrepreneurship
Areas of law significant to new and emerging businesses including forms of ownership, intellectual property, agreements, legal system pitfalls, constraints, and opportunities. The prerequisites are 06T:120 and either 06T:133 or 06T:134.
06T:146/246 - Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation
This course explores the role of technology in the creation, growth, and survival of industries. It examines the process, risks, and rewards of technological innovation and commercialization as well as successful approaches to developing technological strategy and products. The prerequisites are 06T:120 and either 06T:133 or 06T:134.
06T:147 Social Entrepreneurship
This course introduces students to the growing field of social entrepreneurship, which is the process of creating new independent or corporate ventures that pursue dual missions of social benefit and return on investment. The course explores the unique range of issues facing the new social venture, including evaluation of market opportunities, acquiring and managing scarce resources, and maximizing social and economic value. The prerequisites are 06T:120 and 06T:133.
06T:148 E-Commerce Strategies for Entrepreneurs
This course explores e-commerce opportunities and Internet business strategies for entrepreneurial ventures. It examines both business-to-consumer and business-to-business scenarios. Students will receive hands-on experience building and managing a Web site. The prerequisites are 06T:120 and 06T:133.
06T:150/250 - Managing the Growth Business
This course examines issues faced by newly formed businesses experiencing rapid growth. Topics covered include adapting a company's organizational structure, building a management team, hiring new employees, legal issues, raising equity capital, and managing the strategic growth of a business. The prerequisites are 06T:120, 06T:133, and 06T:134.
06T:190/290 - Seminar in Entrepreneurship
This course addresses several special topics in entrepreneurship, which may include business acquisition, franchising, real estate, business valuation, and technology transfer. Topics change each semester. The prerequisites are 06T:120 and either 06T:133 or 06T:134.
06T:192/292 - Entrepreneurship: Business Consulting
This field study course provides students an opportunity to provide consulting services to start-up and early-stage companies. It will explain various aspects of the consultation process including: proposal development, data collection and analysis, and final report preparation and presentation. The prerequisites are 06T:120, 06T:133, and 06T:134 or with consent of the instructor.
06T:194/294 - Entrepreneurship: Advanced Business Planning
This advanced business planning course is designed to assist students in the preparation of high-growth business plans, including how to present a business plan, negotiate with potential investors, and evaluate future growth opportunities. The prerequisites are 06T:120, 06T:133, and 06T:134 or with consent of the instructor.
06T:199 - Academic Internship
Professional internship experience relating to entrepreneurship with associated academic credit (e.g., paper, course work).
