Students Honored for Business Plans
Two University of Iowa students in the Tippie College of Business were named regional winners in the Pappajohn New Venture Business Plan Competition held March 27 in Des Moines. Jared Garfield and John Slump won first place in the regional competition for their business plan for J&J Solutions, the developer of a drug transfer device for the safe handling of hazardous drugs used in IV drug therapy. FastTrac Training Program for Entrepreneurs Starts Feb. 21
Aspiring entrepreneurs can evaluate business opportunities and develop a business plan at the FastTrac NewVenture training program offered by the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (JPEC). The sessions will be from 6 to 9 p.m. on eight Thursday nights in the John Pappajohn Business Building, starting Feb. 21 and ending April 17. The registration fee is $149, and the deadline is Monday, Feb. 18. The FastTrac NewVenture training program helps Iowans take the first steps to start or expand a business. Participants will develop the skills necessary to properly evaluate a business opportunity and leave with a written plan for launching their new venture, and will also learn about funding options. The program is co-sponsored by the Small Business Development Center at the University of Iowa, the Iowa City Area Chamber of Commerce and F&M Bank. Governor Vilsack Announces the First Entrepreneurial Institute
DES MOINES – Governor Tom Vilsack today announced the first Okoboji Entrepreneurial Institute will take place July 30 to August 4th at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on West Lake Okoboji. Twenty-four entrepreneurial students from the state universities will participate in advanced study of entrepreneurship that will include an entrepreneurial simulation, seminars with successful entrepreneurs and business and community leaders, and networking and mentoring to enhance their understanding of entrepreneurship opportunities in Iowa. A group of student entrepreneurs at the University of Iowa is helping disabled business owners at Uptown Bill's Small Mall in Iowa City become more self-sufficient and profitable. Throughout the school year, members of the I-Envision club taught the business owners the basics of e-commerce—how to buy, sell, and trade on sites such as eBay and Amazon. UI JPEC Co-Sponsors Iowa Business Plan Competition
John Pappajohn, Iowa's premier venture capitalist and 1952 University of Iowa alumnus, has launched the Iowa Business Plan Competition in Des Moines. Initially unveiled at the Venture Capital and Entrepreneur Conference last fall, the business plan competition is designed to stimulate business development and provide support to outstanding business plans. Pappajohn has donated a total of $50,000 to be given to the three best business plans as start-up seed money. This contest is now officially being launched so that businesses and entrepreneurs can develop their plans for submission this spring. more...
