Find a Course

Students interested in taking entrepreneurship courses should start with 6T:120 Entrepreneurship and Innovation. For non-business students, you are required to take 6T:050 Foundations in Entrepreneurship or the other approved corequisites either prior to, or concurrent with, 6T:120.


Required Courses for the Certificate in Entrepreneurial Management:

6T:120 Entrepreneurship and Innovation (6T:050 or 6A:001 and 6M:100 or an approved college-level course is a pre-/corequisite)
***Duplicates 6T:125. Choose one: 6T:120 or 6T:125.
This course is an introduction to the entrepreneurial process from conception to birth of a new venture. It discusses attributes of successful entrepreneurs, innovation and creativity, opportunity recognition, venture screening, identification of resources, and feasibility analysis. Offered each semester and online.

6T:125 New Venture in the Arts (6T:050 or 6A:001 and 6M:100 or an approved college-level course is a pre-/corequisite)
***Duplicates 6T:120. Choose one: 6T:120 or 6T:125.
An analysis of arts administration principles and trends as applied to the creation of an arts-related enterprise. Students will examine case studies and create a business plan for a new arts organization or project. Offered each spring semester.

6T:133 Entrepreneurial Finance (6T:120 is a prerequisite)
This course helps students understand the process of capital acquisition and cash flow management. It explains techniques, projections, and measurements used in valuing and funding new and growing ventures. It also teaches how to identify sources and strategies for raising capital. Offered each semester and online.

6T:134 Entrepreneurial Marketing (6T:120 is a prerequisite)
This course provides practical marketing concepts for determining the market potential of a business; developing a marketing plan, identifying markets, creating products, designing promotions and sales programs, and assessing ongoing customer service needs. Offered each semester and online.

6T:150 Managing the Growth Business (6T:120, 6T:133, and 6T:134 are prerequisites)
This course examines issues faced by newly formed businesses experiencing rapid growth. Topics covered include adapting a company's organizational structure, building a management team, hiring new employees, legal issues, raising equity capital, and managing the strategic growth of a business. Students look at case studies particularly in the technology sector. Offered each semester and online.

Students must also complete two of the following courses (6T:120 and either 6T:133 or 6T:134 are prerequisites for each of the following 6T courses unless otherwise noted).

6T:101 Directed Readings in Entrepreneurship (Contact JPEC Executive Director David Hensley for course details and approval) Repeatable: Up to a total of 6 s.h.
An instructor number and approval are required for registration in this course. Contact the instructor (or designated individual) for the instructor number, which you enter as the section number when you register. At the same time, you should make the required semester hours, time, and place arrangements.

6T:144 Nonprofit Organizational Effectiveness I
Operational and financing aspects of nonprofit management; mission, and governance of organization; strategic planning for effective management, including finance, budget, income generation, fund-raising. Offered in fall and online.

6T:145 Legal Aspects of Entrepreneurship (6T:120 and 6T:133 or 6T:134 are prerequisites)
Areas of law significant to new and emerging businesses including forms of ownership, intellectual property, agreements, legal system pitfalls, constraints, and opportunities. Offered each fall and spring semester.

6T:146 Strategic Management of Technology and Innovation (6T:120 and 6T:133 or 6T:134 are prerequisites)
This course explores the role of technology in creation, growth, and survival of industries; process, risks, and rewards of technological innovation, commercialization; successful approaches to developing technological strategy and products. Offered each fall and spring semester.

6T:147 Social Entrepreneurship (6T:120 and 6T:133 are prerequisites)
This course introduces students to the growing field of social entrepreneurship, which is the process of creating new independent or corporate ventures that pursue dual missions of social benefit and return on investment. The course explores the unique range of issues facing the new social venture, including evaluation of market opportunities, acquiring and managing scarce resources, and maximizing social and economic value. Offered each semester and online.

6T:148 E-Commerce Strategies for Entrepreneurs (6T:120 and 6T:133 are prerequisites)
This course explores e-commerce opportunities and Internet business strategies for entrepreneurial ventures. It examines both business-to-consumer and business-to-business scenarios. Students will receive hands-on experience building and managing a web site. Offered each fall and spring semester and online.

6T:155 Arts Leadership Seminar (49:109 or 49:111 or Division of Performing Arts graduate standing are prerequisites)
This seminar offers an advanced study of arts management and administrative principles, practical applications, and trends in arts leadership and advocacy. Offered each spring semester.

6T:190 Seminar in Entrepreneurship: Real Estate (6T:120 and either 6T:133 or 6T:134 are prerequisites, or with consent of the instructor)
This course develops an understanding of all facets of commercial real estate, particularly concerning their impacts on the development of a new venture. Determining a venture's real estate needs and how to decide whether to meet them with a buy, build, or lease is emphasized. Offered each fall and spring semester.

6T:191 Practicum in Entrepreneurship (6T:120 and 6T:133, or with consent of instructor)
Students from five Iowa universities and colleges participate in advanced study of entrepreneurship that includes a team-based entrepreneurial venture computer simulation, seminars with successful entrepreneurs, business and community leaders, and networking and mentoring. Offered each summer semester.

6T:192 Entrepreneurship: Business Consulting (6T:120, 6T:133, and 6T:134 are prerequisites, or with consent of the instructor)
This field study course provides experience to student teams providing consulting services to start-up and early-stage companies; the consulting process—proposal development, data collection and analysis, final report preparation and presentation; projects (marketing studies, financial projections, strategic planning). Offered each semester and online.

6T:194 Entrepreneurship: Advanced Business Planning (6T:120, 6T:133, and 6T:134 are prerequisites, or consent of the instructor)
This course is only open to individual students and student teams seriously pursuing the creation of a new venture. Students are required to complete a formal business plan, develop an elevator pitch for the concept, and prepare a formal presentation suitable for attracting capital to launch the new venture. Offered each semester and online.

6T:199 Academic Internship (1-3 s.h.)
Professional internship experience relating to entrepreneurship with associated academic credit (e.g., paper, course work). An instructor number and approval are required for registration in this course. 6J:125 Entrepreneurial Strategy
This integrative course examines entrepreneurial attributes such as innovation, creativity, and opportunity recognition, coupled with managerial attributes such as strategic management, planning, and budgeting, and the synergistic impact these attributes have on all types of for-profit and not-for-profit organizations. Offered each fall and spring semester.

6J:156 Dynamics of Negotiations (Prerequisite is 90 s.h. completed)
Predictable aspects and dynamics of bargaining experiences; simulations, experiential exercises to foster skills needed for effective negotiations in almost any situation. Prerequisite: 90 semester hours. Offered each fall and spring semester.

6M: 105 Web Business Strategy (Prerequisite is 6M:100)
Introduction to World Wide Web business and marketing; concepts, methods, and applications associated with doing business on the web; web page construction and design; case studies and/or entrepreneurial projects. Offered each fall and spring semester.

***The following course serves as a pre-/corequisite for 6T:120 or 6T:125 for non-business majors. This course does not count toward an elective credit for the Certificate in Entrepreneurial Management.

6T:050 Foundations in Entrepreneurship
This course focuses on understanding core business concepts faced by entrepreneurs in the areas of small business accounting and finance, marketing, and business. Offered each semester and online.
