COMPETITIONS

The University of Iowa John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center (Iowa JPEC) sponsors several competitions throughout the year in which UI faculty, staff, students, UIRF, Founders Club, and the general public can compete to raise money to start or grow their startups. Keep an eye on our homepage for deadlines corresponding with the competitions listed below.

OPEN TO ALL UNIVERSITY OF IOWA UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE STUDENTS

Rose Francis Elevator Pitch Competition (Fall)
Each participating team will make their pitch to a panel of judges to be followed by a series of questions and answers regarding their businesses.

  • Sponsored by Iowa JPEC and Starman Foundation.
  • $20,000 in total cash prizes.

IdeaStorm (Fall/Spring)
Students will have the chance to share their product, business, or idea with like-minded students, learn about resources to make the idea a reality, and win cash.

  • Sponsored by Iowa JPEC and Founders Club.
  • $1,500 in total prizes.

Iowa Startup Games (Fall/Spring)
Accepted applicants attend the three day competition to pitch their startup idea, and spend an intense weekend working to bring an idea to life. By the third day, groups release a minimal prototype and pitch to a group of panelists for a chance to win prizes.

  • $1,500 in total cash prizes.

Business Model Competition (Spring)
This competition allows participants to identify and test their business assumptions early in order to make changes to their ideas so that the end result is fail-proof.

  • Sponsored by Iowa JPEC.
  • $20,000 in total cash prizes.

Pappajohn Student Entrepreneurial Venture Competition (Spring)

  • Sponsored by John Pappajohn, Equity Dynamics, and the five John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Centers in Iowa.
  • Presented in combination with the national Business Model Competition.

ADDITIONAL FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES

Wellmark Venture Capital Fund

Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield has committed up to $5 million to four John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Centers in Iowa to fund the start up of Iowa businesses. The $5 million is part of $25 million Wellmark pledged in 2002 to designate for Iowa-based economic development opportunities.

Venture projects will be identified, investigated, and recommended to Wellmark by the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Centers in four locations. The centers are available to both receive applications and to assist companies applying for funding. Entrepreneurs may submit applications to one of the four regional centers: University of Iowa, Iowa City; Iowa State University, Ames; University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls ; and North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City
